Q1. When can I enter Kokushikan University?
A1.

In our School of Asia 21 and Graduate School of Globalising Asia, students can enroll in the spring or fall semester, which is in April or September. For other faculties and graduate schools, students can enroll only in the spring semester, starting from April.

Q2. Is there “Intensive Japanese Language Program for overseas students”?
A2.

No, we don’t have a special program for the Japanese language study.

Q3. I want to study at Kokushikan University for one year/one semester.
A3.

Please see International Center (intlrel@kokushikan.ac.jp)for details of the exchange programs.

Q4. How much is the tuition? Is there any other fee required?
A4.

The overall school expense varies between courses. The cost for the first year is from 1 to 1.3 million yen and payment can be arranged twice a year. Please click here for undergraduate, and the graduate school students' recruitment for details about the school expenses of graduate school programs. The amount shown is after 30% tuition reduction applied.

Q5. Is there any tuition reduction for international students?
A5.

30% of the tuition will be reduced for the international student who has student visa, and also recognized as having difficulty for the continuous study because of the financial reason. For further detail, please contact International Center

Q6. I don’t have Student visa. Can I take entrance examination for the international student?
A6.

If other conditions are fulfilled, you can take the entrance examination for the international student. However, it is required to have student visa after enrollment in the graduate schools.

Q7. Where can I take the entrance examinations?
A7.

You can take the entrance examination at Kokushikan University campus except for the School of Asia 21’s overseas admission. Please contact the School of Asia 21 for application details.

Q8. I am currently taking a temporally leave from the university in my country. Can I apply for a transfer student at Kokushikan University?
A8.

In order to transfer to Kokushikan University, you must have a degree of an overseas university or a junior college, or an equivalent school education (over 14 years). Please refer to the application guidebook. Also please contact your homeland university regarding their rules.

Q9. I have graduated junior college in my home country. Can I transfer to Kokushikan?
A9.

There are transfer systems into the second year and the third year. If you are a
university or junior college graduate, and finished 14-year school education, you are qualified
to apply the entrance examination with necessary credits admitted. Please inquire at Admission Office
(Japanese only) for more detail.

Q10. I have graduated junior college in my home country. Can I apply for the graduate program?
A10.

The condition for the graduate program application requires 16-year school education. When you are admitted by the credential committee, you can apply. Please contact Graduate School office .

Q11. How can I obtain brochure /application form for the University?
A11.

Please fill in the admission office's online request form (Japanese only) for information. Generally the application forms are to be distributed from the end of September every year.

Q12. When and where is the application accepted? Can I mail the application form?
A12.

The Kokushikan University offers two examinations for international students. One is held in November and applications are accepted mid-October. The other is in February and applications are accepted early January. Please read the brochure /application form for more details. You are required to bring in your application form in person to the University. We do not accept mailed application forms. For the School of Asia 21's overseas direct admission, please refer to the School of Asia 21 web page. (Japanese only)

Q13. What is the qualification for applicant to the graduate program? How can I apply?
A13.

The term for application differs depending on the entrance examination system, and it’s
from September to February. You are qualified to apply if you finished 16-year school
education or expected to finish before enrollment. Some graduate school needs N1. Please
refer to admission guidebook and the graduate school students' recruitment web page (Japanese only)

Q14. I want to know the procedure to become a research student.
A14.

Regarding the research student, please contact the Graduate School office directly.

Q15. Is a guarantor required when entering the University?
A15.

Guarantor is not required when applying, but is required at the time of admission procedure. Guarantor should be a parent or quasi parent. Guarantor does not have to be living in Japan.

Q16. Is it necessary to submit the documents to certify that I have the capacity to defray the living and studying expenses?
A16.

Yes, it is necessary to submit the related documents at the time of application.

Q17. My visa status is not ”College Student”. Should I change the visa status into “College Student”?
A17.

Graduate School requires to have student visa after enrollment, but for undergraduate, to have student visa is not the condition for enrollment. But it is the condition to have student visa for tuition reduction and scholarship application. Please contact the International Center (intlstu@kokushikan.ac.jp)for more information.

Q18. Does Kokushikan University works as an agent to the Immigration Office on behalf of the international students?
A18.

No, we don’t operate this system. International Students go to the Immigration Office for each application by themselves. You can ask about the procedure at the International Center(intlstu@kokushikan.ac.jp).

Q19. Is there any university dormitories Is there any university dormitory for international students? How much is the accommodation fee per month?
A19.

Q20. How much is the average off-campus housing cost per month?
A20.

Private apartments usually cost about 60,000 yen around the Setagaya campus area, and about 40,000 yen around the Machida/ Tama campuses. The University's Student Welfare Office will support students to find apartments

Q21. Can I do some part-time job with the college student visa?
A21.

Students with college student visa may work up to 28 hours per week, and within 8 hours a day during the university’s long vacation with a permit from the Immigration. Types of work permitted are restricted. Please take extreme caution regarding this matter, since in case of any violation of these restrictions, you may not be allowed to continue your study in Japan. Please check web page part-time jobs

Q22. Does the University offer any information for students to find part-time jobs?
A22.

The Student Welfare Office occasionally posts some jobs on the bulletin; however, many international students tend to find jobs through free papers, web pages and their friends.

Q23. I have to go back to my home country for military service. Can I take a leave of absence from the university?
A23.

It is possible to take a leave of absence from the university with the cost of \20,000. If student visa expires during the military service, you have to take the procedure to get a student visa again after your application for reinstatement has approved. When you go into military service after withdrawal from the university, you can be readmitted from the university. Please inquire the office you belong for detail. Also, you can ask International Center(intlstu@kokushikan.ac.jp) for help regarding visa matter.

Q24. Is there any place that I can ask for some advice or support during my stay in Japan?
A24.

Fist of all, please come and talk to International Center. International Student Advisors will help you find a solution. Also each campus has a Student Counseling Room. The University Clinic will be in charge of your health problems. For academic issues, you can consult with the professor in their office hour. Moreover, the International Center introduces external support organizations upon your request.
