Faculty-Affiliated Research Institutes and Centers
What kinds of problems need to be addressed in order for people to sustain a high quality of life into advanced age, retaining their health and independence and not requiring nursing care? This is the perspective from which the Center (administered by the Graduate School of Engineering in cooperation with the Graduate School of Sports Systems) conducts its comprehensive research into the engineering, exercise physiology, and medical aspects of promoting health among the elderly. The principal goals of the Center's research efforts include (1) development of non-invasive procedures for obtaining physiological data, (2) research into techniques based on this data for the early diagnosis of diseases, and (3) development of a virtual training system geared to health maintenance. The Center is intended to be an open institution, contributing to the health of the local community by encouraging cooperation between industry, the academic community and government, and enlisting the cooperation of local residents.
