Most Advanced Technology-Related Law Institute (MATEL)

The Institute conducts research into legal issues and methods of conflict resolution related to advanced technology (information technology, telecommunications, biotechnology, finance, medicine, and other cutting-edge industrial technologies), with the goal of advancing legal research on and off the campus, and at the same time contributing to world-class high-tech development. However, because these technologies are the most advanced we have at the present time, and prospects for their future development uncertain, it is difficult to define with precision the fields MATEL should be concerned with. As a result, MATEL is moving towards a definition of its research concerns that is not limited merely to the so-called high-tech field, but is broadened to include the various social issues arising out of the impact of technological development.
